Task 1
Look at the food pyramid
The food pyramid shows the optimal number of servings to be eaten each day from different food groups. Only little amounts should be eaten from the food groups at the top of the pyramid, but more should be eaten from the foods illustrated at the bottom of the pyramid.
- There are 6 different categories:
- Sweets, Salty Snacks & Alcohol: consume in small amounts.
- Oils, Fats & Nuts: consume oils and nuts in small quantities daily. Butter/margarine use sparingly.
- Dairy Products, Meat, Fish, Eggs, Tofu & plant-based proteins: consume 3 portions of dairy products or plant-based sources of protein like nuts, beans or lentils and less than 1 portion of tofu/fish/eggs/meat ... per day.
- Grains, Potatoes & Pulses: eat 3 portions per day. Grains should preferably be whole grain.
- Vegetables & Fruit: eat 5 portions per day of different colors.
- Beverages: drink 1–2 liters of unsweetened beverages per day, preferably water.
- Study the food pyramid and think about your eating habits.

Sort the icons
- The food pyramid you see below is in disarray.
- Discuss with your colleague which foods should be on top, which in the middle fields and which ones at the bottom.
- Sort the icons in the illustration accordingly.

Task 3
Learn more about the food pyramid
A well-balanced diet is vital to promote a healthy lifestyle. It influences our mental and physical well-being and helps prevent illnesses.
- Food groups: Food is presented in groups according to their respective compositions. Typical examples of the individual groups are illustrated in the food pyramid.
- Quantities: Food in the lower levels of the pyramid should be consumed in larger quantities, whereas foods from the upper levels should be consumed in smaller quantities. All foods may be enjoyed, but the right food combinations and their proportions are essential for a healthy diet.
- Diversity: A balanced diet is a diverse diet that includes different food groups, as well as different foods within the food groups.

- Look at your favorite dishes from «Step 1». Go through each meal. Consider the food pyramid and evaluate, how healthy your preferred foods are.
