Unit 2 – How I can solve conflicts: Step 2

Task 1

Find the correct definitions

  • Read the following expressions: Win-win, win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose. Do you know what they mean?
  • Match the correct definitions.

Task 2

Helping to solve a conflict

Imagine the following conflict situation: “Katja, the 18-year old daughter, wants to watch something on the iPad. Her brother Marvin, 16 years old, needs the iPad to check his emails.”

Now follow the 6 steps to conflict resolution below. Write your results on a piece of paper.

  • Step 1: Think about both parties. Put yourself in their shoes and consider their needs.
  • Step 2: Define the problem.
  • Step 3: Try to come up with as many ideas as possible that could solve the problem.
  • Step 4: Evaluate your ideas. Which ones could solve the problem? Which ones are fair and sensible? Think about both parties. How will they feel about the solutions?
  • Step 5: Can you decide which is the best solution?
  • Step 6: Decide when and how to ascertain if the solution works.

Task 3

Discuss your ideas

  • Exchange your ideas with a partner. Do you have the same solution?
  • Share your solution in the discussion group below. Read the solutions posted by other people and decide which one is the best.
  • Is there always a win-win-solution? When and where does the 6-step-conflict model work? You should also discuss your opinions with a colleague.
