Note: This lesson was taught on the third Thursday in November - in the RKE lesson, Thanksgiving and "Erntedankfest" were treated.

  1. Play with the language on the board (which are the actions from the Unsung Hero video (on the ThaiLife channel) - charades, the Hot Seat, etc....
  2. Watch the video with the learners. If you want, use the worksheet here or have the learners make sentences about what they observe in the video.
  3. Elicit with the learners what "unsung hero" is - ask them what it IMPLIES, how they might say it in different languages (Alltagshelden? les héros du quotidien?).
  4. Elicit from the learners when they have done something nice for someone, when someone  has done something nice for them (see handout above).

Create

Learners choose one person they appreciate. They can choose if they write them a description, a thank you letter, an acrostic. Draft the examples with the learners and have them then re-write them nicely.

The learners then give their nice cards to their unsung heroes! Below you see some snippets of drafts, not final versions!

Assessment Opportunities

  • The products can be assessed for elements of writing: range of vocabulary, copying correctly (but be careful because A1.2 writing assessment should be generous).
  • Speaking can be assessed if the learners can read their cards out loud and when they build sentences about the video. Ask a lesson or two later, or reshow the video at another point and listen to how well they can construct sentences (A man giveS money to a family....) for grammar accuracy and range of vocabulary.
  • Listening skills can be assessed through observation: do the learners do what is asked? If you play with the language on the board and they act out words or sentences, then you can also observe their listening comprehension skills.
  • Alternatively, the worksheet above can be used for assessment purposes if redone at another point - just be sure to record information on reading and writing full sentences and not necessarily spelling!
